    Lithographie (from Ancient Greek, lithos, meaning ‘stone’ and graphein meaning ‘to write’) is a method of printing originally based on the immiscibility of oil and water.

    Lithographie was invented in 1796 by German author and actor Alois Senefelder as a cheap method of publishing theatrical works. Lithographie can be used to print text or artwork onto paper, or other suitable materials.

    To name a few of the artists who have produced litho prints: James McNeil Whistler; Marc Chagall; Alphonse Mucha; Kathe Kollwitz; Pablo Picasso; Eleanor Coen; Jasper Johns; David Hockney; Vincent van Gogh; and Robert Rauschenberg.

    M. C. Escher is considered a master of lithography and many of his prints were created using this process:  Today, many contemporary artists use polyester plates instead of the less flexible limestone or metal plates.

  • Tasmanian-based

    Sydney-born, John completed his Master of Fine Art and Design at UTAS in 2008, and continues to reside and practice his art in Tasmania, Australia.

  • Subject-matter

    John’s curiosity about flora collected by the early French explorers resulted in artist’s residencies in Paris, France, to study at the Jardin des Plantes, Bibliothèque nationale and Musée des Arts décoratifs.

  • Workshops & events

    John periodically runs polyester plate workshops in lithography with the Hunter Island Press. He also exhibits at galleries in Australia and overseas.
